Raspberry Pi is a low-cost, credit card-sized computer that plugs into a computer monitor or TV and uses a standard keyboard and mouse. This is a small, capable device that allows people of all ages to explore calculations and learn how to program in languages such as Scratch and Python. It can do everything desktop computer needs, from browsing the Internet and playing HD video to making spreadsheets, word processing and playing games.
More importantly, Raspberry Pi has the ability to interact with the outside world and has been used by various digital maker projects, ranging from music machines and parent probes to weather stations and texting infrared cameras to birdhouses. We hope to see Raspberry Pi being used by kids around the world to learn how to program and understand how computers work.
What is sense Hat?
The Sense HAT, an add-on to the Raspberry Pi, was designed for Astro Pi’s mission – it was launched to the ISS in December 2015 and is now available for purchase. The Sense HAT, which is a fundamental part of the Astro Pi mission, allows your Raspberry Pi to sense the world around it.

Gyro measurement direction Sensor
So this sensor Purpose is allowing three degrees of movement.
These are often called:
- Pitch (up and down like on a plane) Close and landing
- Yaw (turn left and right to drive a car)
- Rolling (imagine roller fighter)

At rest, the accelerometer will measure the direction and Gravity, but in the direction of movement, it measures to accelerate the power. It is 3 Dimensions. So this Sensor same sensor which is we are using in smartphones.
A magnetometer is used to measure the strength and direction of a magnetic field. Most of the time they are familiarized to measuring the Earth’s magnetic field in order to find the way to the north. If your phone or tablet has one, it is most likely to use a magnetometer to find the North, so most of the smartphones have a magnetometer and they also work like the same.
Temperature sensors are used to measure heat and temperature cold. It’s like a thermometer, you will Put your temperature in your mouth. In addition to the Astro Pi’s built-in electronics and report the temperature as a number Celsius.
Barometric Pressure Sensor
The Astro Pi board has an air pressure sensor built in and will report air pressure to you using either Pascals or Millibars law. And it can be used for measuring the pressure in the space.so this is also a very useful sensor.
Humidity sensor to measure the amount Water vapors in the air, so there are many ways to measure the vapors. But the most common is Relative humidity. One of the main properties of air is that the hotter it is the more water vapors can be suspended within it. So relative humidity is a ratio, usually a percentage, between the actual amount of suspended water vapor to the maximum amount that could suspended for the current temperature
Visible light and Infrared Cameras
The two Astro Pi units on the ISS each have a different camera module: Ed has a standard
Camera and Izzy have an infrared camera (or NoIr camera). These are 5 megapixel cameras that offer high quality still images and support for a variety of video recording modes – just as found in normal cell phones (though Izzy’s cameras have their usual infrared filter removed).
The infrared camera is equipped with a special blue filter that can take photos or videos of green plant chlorophyll production levels.

Joystick and Buttons
A standard direction pad, like those found on games consoles, for up, down, left, right and centre. So that these are pretty same buttons use in Raspberry Pi Sense HAT.
What is Astro Pi and How it is useful in space?
The ISS has two specially crafted Raspberry pi computers Astro P is. There they run code written by children and teens. Each Astro Pi has a webcam, an LED display, buttons and a joystick. They also have a range of environmental sensors: gyroscopes, magnetometers, accelerometers, and sensors that measure humidity, pressure and temperature. Also we can use this module in many projects.
So in every year, we challenge students over the age of 19, writing code on Astro Pis for astronauts from outside Europe to Europe. Our Astro Pi program is designed to inspire young people to develop a lasting interest in coding, space science and STEM subjects and occupations.

So yeah there is a good news is Astro Pi is back! Today They are excited to announce the 2017-18 European Astro Pi challenge in partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA). They are searching for the next generation of space scientists.
So there are two mission in which This year’s challenge includes a brand-new non-competitive mission, in which participants are guaranteed to have their code run on the ISS for 30 seconds!
