How to charge a laptop without a charger sounds like a stupid question to ask, but hold your guns first. There are a few ideas in this article that work (as long as you have the necessary alternatives to a laptop charger).

Laptops are nicer to use because they offer portability and a little bit of use without a power source. But eventually, the battery juice runs out too.

In this article, I’ll explain the items you need and the ways it is possible to charge your laptop without its charger.

What You Normally Need To Charge A Laptop

How To Charge A Laptop Without A Charger

To charge a laptop normally, you need two things.

  • Something that transfers power to your laptop’s battery
  • A power source you can draw on

If you can get alternatives for these two things above, you won’t need to have a normal charger before juicing up your laptop.

The Type Of USB Cable That Can Be Used To Transfer Power

Knowing which USB cable transfers power and having that kind of cable around is usually enough for users to be able to charge their laptops without chargers.

Other items needed like plug adapters, power banks, wall sockets, and car USB ports are more common.

If you’ve got the right cable, chances are you’ll get a power source to connect it to and charge your laptop without a charger.

The normal USB cables we use for our smartphones are USB Type-A cables and they can’t transfer power to laptops.

You will have to get a different type of cable. The Type-C Cable (USB-C).

These cables can be gotten easily at any tech store and they’re much faster in transferring data and power. Most laptops nowadays come with USB-C ports so it is becoming really common.

1. Using a USB Type-A To Type-C Cable

Chances are if you’ve forgotten your charger at home, somebody around will have a USB Type-A To Type-C Cable around and you can use that to transfer power from a power source.

These kinds of cables are cables that have two different ends. They have a USB Type-A on one end and a USB-C on the other end.

This is the most important cable to have when trying to charge a laptop and you don’t have a charger.

A few old laptop models don’t have USB-C ports, you will have to check if your laptop supports this cable. If it doesn’t, skip the tips that need a USB-C cable and use other tips.

2. Using a USB Type-A To Type-C Adapter

A USB Type-A To Type-C Adapter is a small device that has a USB Type-A connector on one end and a USB-C connector on the other end.

The USB Type-A connector can be used to connect to a USB power source while the USB-C connector will be used to connect to the laptop.

If you don’t have a single USB Type-A To Type-C Cable but you have a separate USB Type-A cable and another USB-C cable, you can use the USB Type-A To Type-C Adapter to connect both ends of the cables.

You will then connect one end of the USB-C cable to the laptop and connect the other end of the USB Type-A to any power source or a normal plug adapter.

Please take note of the difference between a USB Type-A To Type-C Cable and a USB Type-A To Type-C Adapter.

Sources Of Power That Can Be Used To Charge A Laptop Without A Charger

  • Power banks
  • Normal electricity outlets and wall sockets (in the case of universal chargers, plug adapters & external battery chargers)
  • Car chargers or USB ports
  • Car cigarette lighter ports

There are a few combinations that will ensure you don’t miss your charger and your laptop gets charged.

There are risks of battery damage if you use unsuitable cables, irregular power sources, and faulty adapters.

Your battery could be damaged in the long run also if you repeatedly use the combinations below.

1. Using A USB Type-A To Type-C Cable With A Plug Adapter

If you forgot your charger but you’ve got the type of cable I explained above. The one with two different ends. Then all you need (along with the cable) is a plug adapter and a wall socket, then you should still be able to charge your laptop.

You will have to fix the plug adapter into the wall socket, connect the USB-C connector end into your laptop and then connect the USB Type-A end of the cable into the plug adapter.

You can also use an adapter (the one explained above) to connect the two different types of cables (if available).

2. Using A USB Type-A To Type-C Cable With A Car USB Or Charger Port

Many modern cars have USB ports that you can use to charge your mobile devices or play songs straight from your phone using the car’s sound system.

All you need to do is plug the cable (the one with two different ends) into the appropriate slots. The USB Type-A end goes into the car’s USB port while the USB-C end goes into your laptop.

I should warn you that using your car to charge your laptop repeatedly can damage your battery in the long-term. But it will do the job if you’re in a bind.

3. Using A USB Type-A To Type-C Cable With A Power Bank

Power banks are already commonplace especially for folks in remote areas without access to constant electricity sources.

You can use these powerful power banks to at least in the short-term power up your laptop’s battery without needing its charger.

You’ll still need the same cable that’s used in the first two options above.

How to charge a laptop without a charger using a power bank is easy. Connect the USB Type-A end into the power bank and then connect the USB-C end to your laptop.

4. Using External Battery Chargers

This option does not need any cable but it needs an external battery charger, a power source, and your laptop battery must be detachable.

If you don’t have these requirements, then look for other options in this list that will apply in your situation.

Detach your laptop’s battery from its port and fit it carefully into the external battery charger’s port. Make sure you place the battery in the port correctly.

Connect the external battery charger to a wall socket and the light indicators will show that your laptop is charging.

The drawback is that external battery chargers aren’t universal. You will need one that fits your laptop’s specs.

5. Using A USB Type-A To Type-C Cable And A Power Inverter (Goes Into The Cigarette Lighter Port)

This idea is similar to a Car USB port. But you’ll be using the cigarette lighter port instead and you need a power inverter for that to work.

Most car owners already have power inverters that they use to charge their mobile devices.

If they use the USB Type-A To Type-C Cable, they can easily charge their laptop using their cars but through the cigarette lighter port.

6. Using Your Mobile Phone To Charge Your Laptop

Normally the laptop is used to charge mobile phones but the roles can be reversed.

How to charge a laptop without a charger using your mobile phone is simple. You only need a mobile phone with a very strong and full battery and a USB Type-A To Type-C Cable.

Connect the Type-A end to your phone and the Type C end to your laptop and it should charge a little bit (depending on your phone battery).

The drawback is that phone batteries don’t usually have enough battery juice to charge a laptop for long.

However, some phones double as power banks. These phones are likely to be able to power your laptop enough to use in the absence of your normal charger.

7. Using Universal Chargers

This is low on the list because it still requires a charger. You don’t need to have the official charger though, you just need a universal charger.

A universal charger is basically a normal charger but with removable ends. It comes with different types of ends that can fit into most laptop charging ports.

All you have to do is select the one that fits into your laptop, plug the charger into a wall socket and your laptop will start charging.

Conclusion

How to charge a laptop without a charger is not particularly difficult if you’ve got the right tools to work with.

If you’re the type that moves around a lot with your laptop and you sometimes forget your charger, you should totally get a USB Type-A To Type-C cable.

This will bail you out every time you need to charge your laptop and you don’t have your charger with you. It is the easiest option to use.

The other items you need like plug adapters (used to charge mobile phones) or a wall socket are much more readily available than the cable. So it is advisable you get the cable and put it in your laptop bag
