Why Google Stopped Making Nexus Phones

0

There has been a complex history of Nexus phones, and the first Nexus model was launched in January 2010. Furthermore, the Nexus One was the first model in the line, and also the first mobile phone to run on Android 2.1 Éclair.

Why Google Stopped Making Nexus Phones

A lot has changed since then, and there Nexus’ light seems to be snapped out. There haven’t been any Nexus phone released by Google, and there won’t be any releases any time soon. In this article, we will be discussing why Google stopped making Nexus phones.

The End of the Road For Nexus Phones

Even though Google is ending the line of Nexus, it doesn’t mean that they won’t be making any phones. Back in 2016, Google announced their new phones, the Pixel, and Pixel XL. This raised question about the Nexus hardware program that was up since 2010.

Generally, the Nexus program included eight phones, four tablets, along with two media players. Google stated that they weren’t planning to release any Nexus products in the future. This also meant that the Nexus line of products was coming to an end.

The Years of Dominance

Before Nexus phones production came to a stop, they were known as the perfect devices that enjoyed the first Android OS before any other phone out there. The Nexus program was meant to offer an example of how Android devices must be built. They were used as project phones that ushered a path to other Android phone makers.

The Nexus tablets and phones were the first devices that got the new Android versions whenever the OS was released. Furthermore, the Nexus phones had frequent hardware features that utilized the new software features that were being showcased by Google in the latest Android OS version.

Plus, Google experimented the Nexus phones with pricing. There were the premium-priced phones that cost more than $600, as well as midrange phones for the average user.

Mostly, the Nexus phones were largely embraced by enthusiasts. But on the contrary, the majority of the general public ignored the phones.

Plus, Nexus phones were available in a Google store, and not other local carrier’s stores.

Why Did the Nexus Program Come to an End?

The simple answer to this question is the need for an upgrade. Any phone or software company out there that wants to stay ahead of the competition must keep their releases updated at all times. In this case, Google wanted to switch from Nexus to Pixel to match the delivery of top phone brands like Apple.

As they evolved into Pixel, a better and more advanced phone compared to Nexus, they wanted to take on Apple latest iPhone models.

  • The Need for Ownership

Question; how does Apple manage to stay ahead of the competition for such a long time? Well, there are many reasons, but one of them is that they are releasing a phone that runs on their own operating system. They don’t have to wait ‘for the next OS update” so that they can update their phones.

All iPhones and iPads run on iOS that is owned by Apple. Now, Google wanted the same ownership and dominance, which is why they switched to Pixel, and they are still releasing some top-rated Pixel models today.

They want their own devices (Pixel) that are designed, manufactured by themselves, and also optimized to their own operating system. That is the same thing that Apple has been doing over the years.

So, Google wanted to evolve, and that is why they went for the Pixel series from the Nexus program.

By the way, one thing that most people don’t know about Nexus is that it was a form of a partnership between Google and other OEMs. This means that Google didn’t have full ownership privileges over the Nexus phones. They didn’t have full control over the hardware section. All they had was the software ownership, Android.

But with the Pixel phones, they have full control and ownership over both the hardware and software sections. That makes Pixel a serious challenger of Apple’s iPhone models.

For now, it is easier to optimize the Pixel phone because both the hardware and software are made by Google.

However, it’s not only the Pixel models that are competitors of the iPhone. Rather, there is the Android One program that is becoming more popular because they are available in the midrange phone section. But for those that want the high-end phones from Google, the Pixel series is the way to go.

Are Nexus Phones Out of the Market?

Google might have canceled the deal to make Nexus phones. However, you should keep in mind that the Nexus program was only but a partnership between multiple phone companies. Even though Google is not making the phone models today, there are still some old versions of the Nexus models that you can find out there.

For instance, the two popular Nexus phones are the LG Nexus 5x and the Huawei Nexus 6p. Do you want to know how they compare? Which is the better phone between the two? Furthermore, what do they have to offer? All those answers are available in this Nexus 5x vs 6p comparison.

Are There Difference Between Nexus and Pixel?

If you are used to the Nexus phone models, you might want to know if there are any differences between them and Pixel. Generally, the difference is not that big. In terms of the design, the Google Pixel is not very much different from Nexus. One of the major similarity is that the Pixel phones get a software experience that is direct from the software developer; Google.

Nexus had the same privilege, even though Google wasn’t the sole owner of the phone’s hardware. Both Nexus and Pixel enjoy rapid software updated from Google. So, if you still own a Nexus phone, you will most likely enjoy a software update faster than a person with a phone of the same caliber as your Nexus.

If you want to enjoy the same experience as the Nexus users had or still have, you might want to try out Google’s Pixel phones. There are many benefits of using Pixel phones, and you should give them a try if you are loyal to Google products.
